USING SOUNDS PRODUCED BY PIGS TO IDENTIFY THERMONEUTRALITY ZONES FOR THERMAL ENVIRONMENT ASSESSMENT RATIOS REA
Amaral,Pedro I. S.; Campos,Alessandro T.; Yanagi Junior,Tadayuki; Cecchin,Daiane; Leite,Evandro M.; Dias e Silva,Nhayandra C..
ABSTRACT Although dry bulb temperature (T) is the environmental variable most commonly used to classify thermal comfort in pigs, environmental assessment ratios provide more accurate information. The objective of this study was to correlate the sound pressure levels (SPL) produced by piglet vocalization with the thermal environment observed during the nursery phase, and subsequently establish thermoneutrality ranges. The experiment was conducted on a pig farm where T, relative humidity (RH), and SPL data were recorded between 9 am-5 pm for 42 days. The association between SPL and T in nursery phase piglets was verified; for thermal comfort to be possible, SPLs were 56.3 to 60.3 dB. The SPLs were subsequently used in predictor equations of ratios, and...

Intensive rearing of juvenile oysters Crassostrea gigas in an upwelling system : optimization of biological production ArchiMer
Bacher, Cedric; Baud, Jean-pierre.
Seasonal growth of juvenile oysters (Crassostrea gigas) kept in an intensive upwelling system was studied from 1984 to 1986 in 60 to 90-day growth experiments. Saline ground water was used to produce Skeletonema costatum which was injected as food into the water supplying the upwelling system. Oyster density, water flow, phytoplankton concentration, temperature and frequency of food addition were controlled. Oyster growth was analysed with multidimensional contingency tables and correspondence analysis. The factors, in order of decreasing influence on growth, were temperature, food concentration and oyster density. A rearing strategy was deduced from the growth analysis for summer and winter. In summer, the density of 120,000 oysters/m2, the flow rate of...

Re-evaluation of Phytophthora citricola isolates from multiple woody hosts in Europe and North America reveals a new species, Phytophthora plurivora sp. nov Naturalis
Burgess, T. Jung, T.I..
During large-scale surveys for soilborne Phytophthora species in forests and semi-natural stands and nurseries in Europe during the last decade, homothallic Phytophthora isolates with paragynous antheridia, semipapillate persistent sporangia and a growth optimum around 25 °C which did not form catenulate hyphal swellings, were recovered from 39 host species in 16 families. Based on their morphological and physiological characters and the similarity of their ITS DNA sequences with P. citricola as designated on GenBank, these isolates were routinely identified as P. citricola. In this study DNA sequence data from the internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS1 and ITS2) and 5.8S gene of the rRNA operon, the mitochondrial cox1 and β-tubulin genes were used in...

Does habitat complexity inluence ish recruitment? ArchiMer
Cheminee, A.; Merigot, B.; Vanderklift, M. A.; Francour, P..
Human activities facilitate coastal habitat transformation and homogenization. The spread of marine invasive species is one example. This in turn may inluence ish recruitment and the subsequent replenishment of adult assemblages. We tested habitat complexity effect on ish (Teleostei) recruitment by experimentally manipulating meadows of the habitat-forming invasive macroalga Caulerpa taxifolia (Chlorophyta). Among the fourteen ish species recorded during the experiment, only two labrids (Coris julis and Symphodus ocellatus) settled in abundance among these meadows. Patterns in the abundance of these juveniles suggested that reduced tri-dimensional meadow complexity may reduce habitat quality and result in altered habitat choices and / or differential...

Essential oil of mustard to control Rhizoctonia solani causing seedling damping off and seedling blight in nursery Trop. Plant Pathol.
Dhingra,Onkar D.; Costa,Maria L. N.; Silva, Jr.,Geraldo J.; Mizubuti,Eduardo S. G..
The essential oil extracted from mustard (Brassica rapa) seeds was evaluated for its effect on suppression of Rhizoctonia solani growth in vitro, and in field soils, for reducing saprophytic substrate colonization and seedling damping off and blight using snap beans as indicator plant, the in vitro growth was completely inhibited at a concentration of 50 mul/l. The saprophytic substrate colonization in soils 24 h after treatment was drastically reduced to 45% at 150 mul/kg soil concentration, in contrast to 100% colonization at concentrations of 0, 50, or 75 mul/kg. This recovery rate gradually declined to 6% and 60%, respectively, in nine days. A control of pre and post-emergence seedling damping off and blight in common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris),...

Temporal changes in lipid condition and parasitic infection by digenean metacercariae of young-of-year common sole Solea solea (L.) in an Atlantic nursery ground (Bay of Biscay, France) ArchiMer
Durieux, Eric; Galois, Robert; Begout, Marie-laure; Sasal, Pierre; Lagardere, Francoise.
Little attention has been paid to flatfish parasitism as a potential factor of variation in year-class strength. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between parasitic infection and nutritional condition of young-of-year (YOY) common sole. Sole were collected monthly from May (early settlement) to November 2004 in a mussel pole culture area, using a push-net or a trawl, and dissected for parasite identification and counts. Total lipids were extracted from the whole body and lipid classes quantified. Triacylglycerols to sterols (free form) ratio (TAG/ST) was used as an index of nutritional status. Digenean metacercariae infection, characterized by two dominant genera, displayed clear seasonal dynamics and the highest records yet reported...

CONSUMERS' VALUATION OF DISEASE-RESISTANT NURSERY STOCK: A CASE STUDY OF DOGWOODS AgEcon
Gardner, Justin G.; Eastwood, David B.; Brooker, John R.; Klingeman, William E..
This article summarizes a study of consumers' willingness to pay (WTP), in urban areas in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Michigan, for a powdery mildew resistant dogwood tree. Powdery mildew is a disease affecting flowering dogwoods that can limit growth, detract from the appearance, and may cause plant decline and death. Study objectives were to provide information about consumers' WTP and to identify potential marketing strategies for the introduction of the disease-resistant tree. On average, survey respondents indicated they are willing to pay a $13.35 premium for a flowering dogwood tree which is resistant to powdery mildew. Regression results led to inferences that the presence of dogwoods in a respondent's yard, presence of dogwoods infected with...

Closed soilless growing system for producing strawberry bare root transplants and runner tips PAB
Giménez,Gustavo; Andriolo,Jerônimo Luiz; Janisch,Djeimi; Godoi,Rodrigo.
The objective of this work was to test a closed soilless growing system for producing bare root transplants and runner tips of two strawberry clones, using two categories of substrates. The system used corrugated roofing panels of fiber-cement, over which a substrate layer was used as a growing bed. The nutrient solution was pumped from a reservoir toward the upper end of the roofing panels and drained back to a reservoir. Plant growth and development were determined for two advanced strawberry clones, grown in sand or in Plantmax organic substrate. Growth of the stock plants and the number and dry mass of bare root transplants were similar in the substrates, but bare roots differed in their crown diameters by substrate. For number of runner tips, no...
